Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Indonesia, Southeast Asia and Oceania, and the seventh of the world’s highest summits.

The name ‘Carstensz’ was picked after the name of its discoverer, Jan Carstenszoon, an adventurer commissioned by VOC for leading an expedition to south-coastal of New Guinea. In the middle of this expedition in 1623, Jan saw an iceberg on mountain peak near the equator line. He was deemed mad due to an overwhelming long journey to Oceania by the time he reported what he had seen about.

Around three centuries after, Dutch expedition in 1899 aiming to create the map of Papua Island finally justified Carstenzoon’s witness upon the mountain peak which was covered by snow. To honor Carstenzoon, the snowy peak took his name afterward, Carstensz Pyramid. Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia later changed its name to Puncak Jaya. Yet, it is still better known as Carstensz Peak among Indonesian people. Located in  Jayawijaya Mountains, in central Papua of Indonesia, Carstensz Pyramid is 4.884 meters at height. Snow covers the peak and it becomes the only snowy peak in Indonesia, a tropical country in Southeast Asia. It is a big challenge to conquer since the term “Seven Summits” was getting popular.

Papua’s tropical wilderness always welcomes you to climb the phenomenal Carstensz Pyramid. Winding hills, rugged tracks, and rushing rivers just waiting to be conquered. Local people greet with their genuine smile and soon becoming new friends, letting you redefine your climbing experience. It is worth the fatigue over a long journey. The snow is waiting up there. A reward for those who dare to beat the challenge. A paradise for courageous adventurers.

Via Trekking

Carstensz Pyramid Expedition by trekking has 2 routes, namely Ugimba and Suanggama. The advantage of trekking through these routes is the clients are able to get in touch with the villagers and their culture. At the same time, they can enjoy the beauty of nature. It is absolutely a great opportunity. However, going through trekking trails usually takes longer time, and clients must be extremely fit physically and ready to face obstacles such as difficult routes and social problems. We have guides, porters, and teams who have experience addressing these kinds of issues. Yet, this package is offered based on social condition because the security and safety of clients are the most important aspects of our service.

CONDITIONS FOR TREKKING PARTICIPATION

You will be responsible for yourself and have the ability to deal with any problems that may be encountered during the Carstensz pyramid journey. You must be fully aware that the most problem faced by every Carstensz expedition team is the blockade from villagers. They will ask money around Rp.500.000-Rp.2.000.000 (the amount might be increased from time to time). It might take sometimes to negotiate with them.

2

The uniqueness of nature required you to a long distance trail. You will be walking in the dark of early morning and all day through mountainous terrain and have undertaken the necessary training.

3

You are able to deal with, on your own without assistance, deteriorating weather conditions (low temperatures, strong winds, and rain) and other troubles expected when traveling across the mountanious terrain.

4

You are able to deal with extreme fatigue, internal organ and digestive problems, muscle pain, mild physical injuries and psychological problems on your own.

5

Your fully understand that you are responsible for overcoming the above conditions 1 to 5 on your own and that it is not the responsibility of Adventure Carstensz.

6

You are fully aware that when participating in an outdoor activity such as this Carstensz Pyramid, your safety depends on your own skill, abilities, and attitudes.

faq

You can reach Carstensz through two ways: via helicopter or trekking. Renting a helicopter from Timika to Basecamp (one way) costs you around Rp 45.000.000 – Rp 53.000.000 (USD 3.300 – USD 3,700). If you prefer trekking, you should rent a small plane which costs the similar amount. Why? It is the only transportation mode to the rural area in Papua, including Sugapa, where you start trekking. You can go on a commercial plane that costs you Rp 300.000 (USD 20.80) up to Rp. 2.000.000 (USD 138.66). However, it will be difficult, because the passenger’s baggage is limited for this type of small plane. Moreover, you have to carry your climbing equipment which will be considered overcapacity.

Trekking route to Carstensz is difficult. Therefore, the cost that you have to pay for guide and porter in expedition will be over Rp 5.000.000 (USD 400) per person.

There are too many negative stories about Papua that we cannot control their spread and biases. There must be social issues anywhere in the world, especially in the area where people stick their lives to their custom and culture like Papuan. However, there has never been a case where our clients found terrible problems when they went to Carstensz through trekking.

Clients’ safety is our first priority. Therefore, if there is a safety issue related to trekking route is blown around and we cannot confirm the clarity of this kind of information, we will suggest our clients to go on a helicopter. Nevertheless, we will be happily escorting our clients to go along trekking route when we have clear and precise information about safety along trekking route.

There is no difference of cost between local and international clients. The offered price(s) has been suited to the expenses clients need to spend on to stand on top of Carstensz.
